Application Process

There are several procedures for the application process, depending on the applicant’s goals and particular choice of programs or courses.

Admission Requirements

Education
Completion of secondary education or the equivalent (GED) is required for admission to most programs at Valdosta Technical College. Completion of secondary education or the equivalent (GED) is required for all health occupations programs, all business programs, and certain technical programs. Specified programs that do not require secondary completion or GED for admission allow the student to enter the program on an "ability to benefit" status, but these students must obtain the GED prior to graduation.

Age
Applicants must be at least 16 years of age. The minimum age for the Cosmetology program, several health occupation programs, and other programs may vary.

Health
Applicants must be physically able to attend school regularly and must meet the physical requirements for the course in which they plan to enroll. Although Valdosta Technical College does not discriminate on the basis of disability, students must be able to perform the "essential functions" of the occupation for which they plan to train. Physical examinations, lab tests, and immunization are required for students in medical programs after acceptance to the program and prior to being allowed to participate in clinical training at an affiliated site.

Admission to Health Occupations Programs
Please see specific program requirements under the individual program descriptions on this website.

    Instructions
Adobe's Acrobat Reader is required to download the Application for Admission. Click here to get the software.

On the application for admission, the Technical Colleges requires students to identify their country of lawful residence and may require the submission of other information necessary to make a determination of legal residency for tuition-rate and student advisement purposes. The Petition for Georgia Residency Classification Form establishes residency for tuition purposes only. It is not a guarantee of financial aid awards. Any applicant to the college who is a non-US citizen; has not been a legal resident of Georgia for the past twelve consecutive months; is in the military stationed in Georgia or the dependent of an applicant stationed in Georgia; or who under the age of 24 years old must complete the Petition for Georgia Residency Classification form and return it to the Admissions office at Valdosta Tech, along with the required documentation noted on the form. The Petition form may be downloaded here: Valdosta Tech Residency Application

  2. Submit a valid, final transcript from an acceptable accredited high school or GED scores, when required by program standards (See section on Proof of Secondary Education) All college transcripts from regionally or nationally accredited postsecondary institutions are also required prior to enrolling in classes to determine admissions status and for advising purposes.

  3. Applicants who have not taken the college’s placement test within the last five (5) years will be scheduled to do so. Applicants without the high school diploma or equivalent, applying to specified programs, will be scheduled for the Ability to Benefit Test. Testing will be scheduled upon receipt of the application, application fee, and appropriate transcripts. Applicants may exempt the placement test under certain conditions (see section on The Placement Test).

Technical Certificate Programs
Many short-term technical certificate programs such as Emergency Medical Technician and Commercial Truck Driving adhere to the same requirements for admission as diploma and degree programs. All require that the applicant complete and submit an Application for Admission and pay a $15.00 application fee. Some certificate programs require proof of secondary education while others do not. Some certificate programs require placement testing while others do not. Specific information on technical certificate programs is available in the Students Customer Service Center, in the Office of Continuing Education, or on this website.

Non-credit Continuing Education Courses
Persons who wish to take continuing education courses for non-credit must:

  1. Submit an "Application for Admission."
  2. There is no application fee, secondary education requirements, or placement testing required.

Proof of Secondary Education
Generally, a transcript from a public high school indicating that the student graduated with an acceptable diploma is proof that the student completed his or her secondary education. Possession of the GED diploma is also acceptable for admission. All college transcripts from acceptable post secondary educational institutions will also be required at the time of admissions

Public school graduates
Graduates of accredited public high schools must have obtained a diploma with a seal indicating that the student has satisfied attendance requirements, Carnegie unit requirements, and the state assessment requirements. High school awards that do not meet the minimum requirements such as certificates of attendance or special education diplomas will not be considered as completion of secondary education.

Private school graduates
Private schools must meet accreditation guidelines established and published by the Georgia Department of Technical and Adult Education. Approved accreditation include:

  • The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS), regional accreditation agencies, and other similar organizations provide accreditation for public and private colleges and secondary schools.
  • Georgia Accreditation Commission (GAC) accredits public schools through the 12th grade, private Georgia schools, and educational agencies for special populations.
  • Accreditation Council for Independent Study (ACIS) provides accreditation primarily for home schools.
  • Georgia Private School Accreditation (GAPSAC) is an umbrella association for the Association of Christian Schools International, Seventh Day Adventist, International Christian Accrediting Association, and the Georgia Association of Christian Schools.

Home school graduates
Home schools must meet accreditation as specified in the approved list of accreditation agencies (see Private School Graduates) or submit documentation of home schooling that includes a letter from the local school superintendent’s office showing that the parents conformed to the requirements of the Georgia Department of Education by having:

  • notified the superintendent of the intent to home school the child prior to initiating home schooling.
  • submitted the required attendance reports to the superintendent’s office on a monthly basis as required by the regulations.
  • submitted final or exit exam scores from an accredited national testing program every three years as specified by the regulations.
  • submitted annual progress reports for the equivalent of the home schooler’s junior and senior years.

Home schooled students who meet the documentation guidelines above must also submit SAT scores of at least 480 Verbal/430 Math or ACT scores of at least 18 Verbal/17 Math and achieve the appropriate minimum placement test scores on ASSET or Compass for the program of choice.

Foreign secondary education
Graduates of secondary schools or colleges outside the United States must have their transcripts translated and evaluated for equivalency by an approved evaluation organization or meet accreditation as specified in the approved list of agencies. The cost of the translation and evaluation of the student’s transcript is the responsibility of the student. The evaluation report must be received by the Admissions Office directly from the evaluation organization and may not be submitted by the student directly. Information on evaluation organizations is available in the Admissions Office.
