Dual Enrollment-HOPE

The Dual Enrollment-HOPE Program is a collaborative effort between the Georgia Department of Education (DOE) and the Georgia Department of Technical and Adult Education (DTAE). The purpose of the Dual Enrollment-HOPE Program is to offer additional educational opportunities for secondary students. Students can earn credit both from high school and from a technical college while they are still in high school. Dual Enrollment classes can be offered at the high school or at the technical college.

WIN, WIN, WIN Situation:

Through the Dual Enrollment Program, the high school earns FTE for the student, VTC gets the full tuition and fees for the student, and most importantly the students get the HOPE grant to pay for tuition and books (up to $100) while getting a jumpstart on their college educations.

Dual Enrollment Course Requirements:

Courses offered through the Dual Enrollment program must have a corresponding secondary CIP number. The high school will give the student credit for the high school course for which the postsecondary course is aligned.

The technical college will not offer courses that directly compete with secondary courses, but exceptions can be made for overflow students.

The course specified as Dual Enrollment-HOPE must be a part of a required course within a technical certificate of credit or diploma program awarded by the technical college.

In order for the high school to receive FTE, the Dual Enrollment courses must have a secondary faculty member assigned to the course who checks on the classroom periodically to monitor attendance, classroom management, and grades. The secondary person must be available during the class period assigned and will not have the responsibility of assigned instruction of any other class during the period. The secondary staff person must be certified but can hold a position other than teacher. Note: The post-secondary person assigned to the class should be coded as 555.555555 for FTE purposes.

Dual Enrollment Student Requirements:

A Dual Enrollment student must ...

  • Fill out a Valdosta Technical College application.

  • Provide VTC with copies of high school transcripts.

  • Meet all technical college admission requirements for the selected program of study (including passing the ASSET test if applicable to the program).

  • Fill out a HOPE Grant Application Form.

High school students who are interested in the Dual Enrollment program must initiate the process by contacting their high school counselor.

Options for High School Students

"I graduated from a program at VTC while I was still a senior in high school. Now, I can go straight to work or continue my education."
