The Counseling Center, a division
of the Academic Support Center, offers a variety of counseling services
to potential students and to currently-enrolled students at VTC.
Services are designed to help students succeed in college, in the
workforce and in life in general.
Individuals may be self-referred or may be referred by instructors
or other VTC staff. Appointments are recommended, but every effort
will be made to accommodate walk-ins. Students or staff may contact
the Admissions office at (229) 333-2100 or visit in person to arrange
for counseling services. You also may call (229) 249-4821 to speak
directly with a counselor.

Career Counseling
Career
Counseling is available to any potential or current student
who is unsure of his or her program choice. General information
is obtained from the student (e.g. educational background, personal
interests and preferences, etc.) to assist in the guidance process.
Program options are explained. The counselor provides information
regarding the application process, along with information regarding
financial aid. While the counselor will offer direction, the final
program decision is up to the student.
Career Testing
Career
Testing is offered free of charge as a part of general career
counseling. Career Scope, an interest and aptitude test, is the
primary tool used to assist the counselor and student in choosing
a career path best suited to the individual. After the test is given,
the student meets with the counselor to review the results of the
test and make an appropriate program choice. Appointments for career
testing may be made through the Counseling Center.
Academic Counseling
Academic
Counseling is provided to students experiencing difficulty
in their coursework. Students may be self-referred or may be referred
by instructors to determine if their current course of study is
suited to them or if a change of program would be in their best
interest.
Attendance Counseling
Attendance
Counseling is available for students having difficulty attending
class on a regular basis. Students with excessive absences may need
assistance with transportation, personal problems or finances. Counselors
attempt to determine the source of the problem and propose possible
solutions to attendance problems.
Personal Counseling
Personal
Counseling is offered to any student with personal, relationship,
or family problems. Counseling in this area is limited, and counselors
may refer the student for in-depth personal counseling to an outside
agency when deemed necessary.
Substance Abuse Counseling
Substance
Abuse Counseling is provided on a limited basis; counselors
may refer students to outside agencies for assistance. VTC provides
regular seminars and information on alcohol and drug abuse to all
students, faculty and staff.
Non-Traditional Career Paths
Non-Traditional
Career Paths are explored with potential and current students
during the career counseling process. Non-traditional careers are
those traditionally dominated by persons of the opposite sex. Non-traditional
options may provide greater career and earning opportunities to
students, both male and female.
Tutoring Services
Tutoring
Services are provided free of charge to students experiencing
difficulty in learning support, core or entry level occupational
courses. Tutoring services may be requested by completing a Request
for Tutoring Assistance form. Forms are available at the Customer
Service Center located in Building 100, Room 117. Please refer to Tutoring Resources for additional information.
Services for Students with Disabilities
Students
with documented disabilities may be eligible for special
accommodations to assist them in meeting their personal, educational
and career goals. The Special Needs Coordinator is available to
provide services that maximize each student’s opportunity
for success. These services may include but are not limited to providing
special equipment and support, testing and evaluation with reasonable
accommodations, agency referrals, architectural accessibility and
individual accommodation planning. Students wishing to disclose a disability and request reasonable special accomodations should contact the Special Populations Coordinator, Kay Morris, at (229) 333-5368 or by email at lmorris@valdostatech.edu.
